Dear Band Student and Parent:

Welcome to an exciting season with the Fort Myers High School Greenwave Music

Department.   We would like to extend an invitation to all Fort Myers High School students and students enrolled in the Fort Myers IB Program to become a part of this fine organization for which we are all proud.  This coming season promises to be full of adventure as the “Greenwave Music” continue their success.

I would like to take this opportunity to remind you of your participation in the Greenwave Marching Band.  The Greenwave Marching Band is an excellent opportunity for new students as it helps you to become well acquainted, through hard work and dedication to excellence in performance, with some of the most genuinely enthusiastic students at Fort Myers High School. Marching band is required for all co-curricular ensemble classes with the exception of an orchestra.

Please share this packet of information with anyone you know who might be interested in becoming a member of a unique organization that is dedicated to excellence and service.

Please read the following information found throughout this packet.  You will find information on the mandatory band camp.  Do check out our calendar page for the school year and begin to pencil in dates.

Don’t miss out on what could be the most exciting experience that you can have on our campus at Fort Myers High School Music Department.    I have been here at Fort Myers High School for fifteen years and I loved every minute of it…  I know you will too.  Besides, why be just a student on our campus when you can be a part of the Greenwave Music Department!!!

Updates and pertinent information will be announced on our website at www.fmhsgreenwave.net.  Please check this site from time to time this summer.

WE CORDIALLY INVITE YOU TO PARTICIPATE IN THE

2017-18 MUSIC DEPARTMENT PROGRAMS

HOW DO I BECOME A MEMBER OF THE GREENWAVE MUSIC?

Read the information presented in this booklet and attend the marching band camp. The camp will be from August 2nd through August 5th.

I AM GOING TO BE A FRESHMAN, AM I REQUIRED TO BE IN MARCHING BAND?

Marching band is required for all ensembles students with the exception of orchestral members. Our goal is to align our department with the FBA rules and regulations.  Marching band is a great way to meet new friends, become acclimated to the school, to learn time management skills but most of all…play energetic music at the games.

WHY JOIN THE FMHS MUSIC DEPARTMENT?

To belong to a group whose performance standards are highly professional.

To make life more pleasant and meaningful on a campus of 2000 students by being a member of a closely knit and select group whose interests are similar.                                                                           To travel and enjoy social events.

To travel and enjoy social events.

To learn about music.

To enjoy the thrill of competition.

To build character, discipline, and PRIDE.

To see the excbe announced in action!

DO I PLAY WELL ENOUGH?

We have a place for you in the Greenwave Music Department if you wish to participate.

Let us help you to play better.

WILL I HAVE TIME AND WILL MY GRADES SUFFER?

YES, you will have time! NO, your grades will not suffer because of the Greenwave Music Department!  Over 250 students participate in the music program and their grade point averages are consistently higher than the high school average.  The music staff is interested in your scholastic career and will not encourage you to do anything harmful to your studies.

WILL I HAVE TME FOR OTHER ACTIVITIES?

Yes! The coaching staff and other instructors have always worked well the music department and have been supportive of the music program.  If schedules do conflict, the instructors of both activities will decide which function you should attend.  We have had members on the IB Program, Math Team, Football team, Cheerleading Squad, Drama, and participants of ROTC that participate with the music department activities and still have been successful in all activities.

WHO ELSE CAN JOIN THE MARCHING BAND?

We have a spot for everyone. Your best friends can join and be a part of the dance team.  This unit provides the marching band with the unique visuals through the use of body movement, poms and other unique props.   Strings and keyboard musicians are also welcome as auxiliary members or as instrumentalists and percussionists.  So do your part and pass this information along to a friend and have them email me at markld@leeschools.net

WHAT IS “MARCHING BAND CAMP” AND WHY DO I HAVE TO ATTEND?

The Greenwave Marching Band is an organization which is devoted to excellence in performance. To maintain that excellence we must be able to execute the fundamentals of marching and playing at a very high level.    Band Camp provides all Greenwave Music members, new and returning, the opportunity to get into shape physically, mentally, and musically so that we can work together to produce exciting performances.  The emphasis is on FUNDAMENTALS!!

JUST HOW TOUGH IS IT GOING TO BE DURING PRESEASON TRAINING?

We approach this important training period very seriously. It is intense work and we must work under strict time limits…after all, we must have a pre-game show and halftime show ready for that first football game where people are going to be waiting to see how we can top last year’s performances!  Preseason Training is designed to train our members, not to cut them.   We work hard during rehearsals, but we also play hard during our free time!  You will enjoy the camaraderie and satisfaction you will feel from working hard to accomplish something worthwhile.  We can’t promise that you will enjoy every minute of it because it is hot, strenuous, and sometimes frustrating, but we can promise that when you see the audience applauding and hear the stands cheering you’ll know that it was well worth the work!!!

WHEN DO I REPORT TO CAMPUS FOR PRESEASON TRAINING?

Wednesday, August 2nd from 12:00 – 6:00.  We will continue with this schedule through

Friday with a ceremony and Parent gathering at 6:00 on Friday.

WHAT DO I NEED TO BRING WITH ME TO PRESEASON TRAINING?

Rehearsal Clothes:  shorts, tennis shoes with arch supports, a raincoat, a hat

A lyre and flip folder for your instrument.

Water, Water, and more Water

Survival Items:  Suntan lotion, ligament, sunglasses, thermos jug

A lyre and flip folder for your instrument.

Instrument Accessories:  mouthpiece, reeds, neck strap, valve oil

A lyre and flip folder for your instrument.

Snacks for breaks and plenty of water

WHAT ABOUT MEALS DURING PRESEASON TRAINING?

Snacks during Preseason Training are left to each student to provide. Due to the extremely vigorous physical activity involved in our training sessions, all students are CAUTIONED against missing “regular” nutritious meals.  It is IMPERATIVE that you eat well-balanced meals three times a day.

MUST I HAVE MY OWN INSTRUMENT?

The School Board of Lee County and the Fort Myers High School Band                Booster have provided the music program with various instruments that may be               checked out.

MUST I SIGN UP FOR GREENWAVE MUSIC AS A CLASS?

Yes! Fort Myers High School students must be enrolled in their appropriate ensemble or Band Auxiliary class for the entire school year.  It is possible to be an IB student and to be enrolled in the music classes all four years.    Dancers must register for the dance class.

WHAT IS THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN THE WIND ENSEMBLE, CONCERT BAND, AND THE MARCHING BAND?

The Fort Myers High School Wind Ensemble rehearses and performs concert literature throughout the entire school year. The marching band is a co-curricular activity that meets only after school.
